Sciatica and Chiropractic Treatment

Nerve pain can be some of the most pronounced and challenging pain experienced. The sciatic nerve is the culprit for many who suffer leg and back pain. This is because it is a long nerve that runs down from the lower area of the back and continues on down the back of the leg.

When there is a problem with this nerve, it is described as sciatica, and you will experience pain, numbness, tingling and even weakness throughout that region.

You may live with ongoing pain, pain that worsens only when sitting, sharp pains during movement and a variety of other issues.

It is, in essence, a pinched nerve and because of that, you may have only periodic discomfort or non-stop irritation and pain.

Sciatica, however, is not an actual medical diagnosis. Instead, it is considered to be the symptom of another condition. For example, someone with a herniated disc in their lumbar region may experience sciatica as a symptom of this issue.

Six Potential Issues

Typically, experts will say that there are six recognized reasons for sciatica:

  • Herniated lumbar disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Stress fracture to the vertebrae (Isthmic spondylolisthesis)
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction

Because an array of issues could be to blame, we first do a complete assessment on anyone experiencing what appears to be sciatica. Finding the cause or source of the pain is only the first step.

After that, nonsurgical interventions are used whenever possible. Quite often, the misalignment can be treated with gentle adjustments and manipulation, hot or cold treatments and special exercises. Massage may be helpful but is not ideal for all.

You don’t have to live with the discomfort of sciatica, and with a full assessment of your spinal health it is possible to identify the causes and overcome the issue.
